The dissertation considers the complex of problems relating to the formation and development of the genealogy of Cossack officialdom families, namely the scientific heritage of scholars, theoretical and methodological principles of their works, the disciplinary status of Ukrainian genealogy, and main tendencies of its development. The author analyses the aсhievements of national historiography in the sphere of Cossack officialdom genealogy during the second half of the 17th - early 21st century and defines the peculiarities and specificity of scientific methods of the brightest representatives of Ukrainian genealogy in the process of studying family pedigrees of this stratum of Ukrainian society. The work traces the gradual growth of the scientific standard of works, the enlargement of the source base, strengthening of critical attitude toward the sources, and use of European methodological and theoretical achievements in genealogy. It emphasizes the great importance of the scientific heritage of O. M.Lazarevsky and V. L. Modzalevsky for the advance of Ukrainian genealogy. The dissertation deals with the works by Russian historians devoted to the Cossack officialdom families as well. The Ukrainian diaspora scholars and scientific institutions have also made a significant contribution to the development of this trend in national genealogy.
