Essay

The present thesis is a comprehensive phonosemantic research of thirty English initial consonant clusters in the language and their symbolic functions in the text. The psycholinguistic, structural and quantitative methods have been used. For the first time the semantics of all thirty initial consonant clusters of modern English has been established and the interdependence between the use of certain consonant combinations and connotation of the text has been proved. As a result of the conducted research we assume that the frequent use of the initial clusters can be conditioned not only by sound symbolism but also by the frequent use of certain words. On the basis of initial sound combinations the formula for determining the phonetic meaning of poetic, prose and publicistic texts has been suggested.
