The dissertation is dedicated to the problem of modeling the contents of teaching a foreign language as a general educational subject for pedagogical educational establishments of the 1st and 2nd accreditation level. On the basis of existing approaches to the problem the main components of this phenomenon were determined. The author presents principles of constructing contents of teaching a foreign language. In the process of investigation the actual state of teaching a foreign language at these educational establishments was analysed. The initial level of foreign language mastering by the first-year students was established as low. On the basis of the present demands of education the curriculum and manuals were analysed and the expediency of introducing two stages of education: correction course and basic course was theoretically founded. The contents of teaching a foreign language at these stages is determined according to the communicative approach. There has been worked out the model of contents of teaching a foreign language as a general educational subject. Manuals of teaching English are worked out by the investigator in accordance with two components. They are: "English. The Correction Course" and "The Communicative Course of English". Experimental approbation of the offered model certified that its inculcation into studying process would supply necessary and sufficient level of communicative competence of students. This model is sure to be used in teaching any foreign language.
