The dissertation deals with a complex analysis of English interjections as a part of speech and their pragmatic meanings and discursive peculiarities. Interjections were studied within English parts of speech system, their interaction with the other constituents of this system. Interjectional convention-conditioned and context-conditioned pragmatic meanings are determined. Directive and expressive interjections are analyzed among convention-conditioned interjections. It was established that the corpus of the directive interjections is heterogeneous. They differ in the grade of categoricity, their use depends on the communicative situation and on the social status of interlocutors. Expressive interjections reflect emotional richness of the English language. They include both units of speech etiquette and emotional responses. The meanings of the context-conditioned interjections become apparent only in the definite situation. These interjections were classified according to the emotions they express. Interjectional pragmatic variations and pragmatic syncretism were analyzed. Special attention was given to place and role of interjections/interjectional expressions in discourse. Types of interjectional expressions pragmatically sufficient links with the other discourse components were described. Particular relations of pragmatic concordance and pragmatic disconcordance, communicative interaction moves peculiarities were revealed.
