Essay

The dissertation examines one of the more vivid cultural phenomena in Ukrainian music in the last quarter of the 20th century - the development of a contemporary music drama theatrical genre and within it, the active process of its growth. The specifics of the process are analysed in the dissertation from the point of view of the natural historical development of the new music theatre genre - the folk opera - using as an example Yevhen Stankovych's work "Tsvit paporoti" ("When the Fern Blooms"); the analysis includes a review of the broad social and stylistic context of the period being examined. The basic stylistic parametres of Stankovych's "Tsvit paporoti" are discussed, and are highlighted as a unique, innovative and transition artistic phenomenon of the period; the work establishes a stylistic logic in the creation of a national variant of the neofolkloristic style in contemporary Ukrainian music; parallels are drawn to the music theatre of B.Bartok, I.Stravinsky, C.Orff, M.Ravel, L.Janacek.
