Essay

Object - is the silence effect as phenomenon of nonverbal communication in the semantic scope of the English belles-lettre discourse. Aim - is comprehension of the linguistic cognitive and linguistic pragmatic character of silence, identification of the silence effect status, determination of the semantic load of nonverbal (graphical) and verbal means of silence identification in the English belles-lettre discourse. Methods - are descriptive, comparative, component analysis, and the method of the linguistic observation. Theoretical importance - is asserted by the results of investigation being the significant contribution to the theory of communication. Comprehension of the silence effect ontology and its taxonomy in the modern English language are based upon the development of the "graphic silence" as separate paradigm of the semantic polyfunctional punctuation signs, silence verbalisers and model types of its nomination. Practical importance - is assured by the possible use of investigation resultsin such academic disciplines as linguistics, language communication, stylistics, lexicology of the English language, text interpretation; also, it can be practically used while developing master's and diploma papers in the appropriate thematic matter, in the scientific explorations of linguistic, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic directions. Field - is philology.
