Essay

The study highlights the issue of manipulative impact on the addressee in modern English mass media. Mind manipulation is realized via wide range of verbal and non-verbal means. The dissertation offers a classification of manipulative strategies and tactics, used by English mass media, taking into account extralinguistic factors, including social, ideological and psychological characteristics of the audience, stereotypical worldview as well. Modern English mass media use lexis with positive connotation to evoke corresponding evaluation of the information by the recipient, as well as resort to euphemisation to cause neutral or positive perception of negative phenomena in political discourse. Evaluative meanings inherent to lexis used in the text help to create general positive or negative context of the article. Considerable attention is devoted to sophisticated principles of grammatical, structural, graphical and pictorial means used to manipulate addressee's consciousness.
