Volkova T. Efficacy of a modified method of preferential looking in visometry of young children

Object: resolution of the visual analyzer in young children. Purpose: a higher efficacy of objective visometry in young children by perfecting the method of preferential looking (PL). Methods: visometry,biomicroscopy,ophthalmoscopy,schiascopy; a stand screen, assessment cards, a video camera, a stopwatch, a mirror, an eye shield.A modified PL method is suggested; it is ensures an objective assessment of visual acuity (VA) in young children. Data about terms of formation of the macular and foveolar reflexes and their relationship with the development of resolution of the visual analyzer in healthy children are supplemented. When employing the modified PL method, average physiological values of VA were determined for healthy children aged 1-48 months. The use of the modified PL method makes it possible, on the average, to reduce the time period required for examining VA of one child in comparison with the traditional PL method by 16.2 %, with ONRM by 40.6 %, and with OTVM by 14.4 %. The main results of the work were introduced at the Filatov Institute, Kharkov City Children's Polyclinic No. 15 and Kharkov Regional Children's Home No. 1. A higher efficacy of visometry.
