Basok V. Contextual Synonymy: Semantic, Stylistic and Pragmatic Aspects (A Study of Nouns in Modern German).

The dissertation focuses on the study of semantic, stylistic, and pragmatic peculiarities of contextual synonymy of nouns in Modern German. It is established that semantic properties of contextual synonyms are closely linked to their pragmatic properties. The meaning of а contextual synonym is a complex unity of its denotative, motivational, connotative and pragmatic components revealed in context. The semantic structure of contextually synonymous nouns includes additional connotations that broaden the semantic structure of the respective utterance, which makes it possible to consider them as nominative units of a higher informational value. It is proved that the pragmatic orientation of contextually synonymous nouns is differentiated in compliance with the contextual parameters. Verification of the pragmatic motives that underlie the use of a linguistic unit as a contextual synonym is complicated in case of emotional, social, professional, or ethnic incongruity of the communicants.
