Essay

The fauna of 11 reptile species (13 subspecies) of the forest-steppe zone of Left-bank Ukraine has been investigated. Distribution, habitats, sexual and size-age structure of populations, diurnal and annual activity patterns, required measures for reptiles conservation in the region are considered. Interaction between the two sand lizard subspecies was studied. The results of experimental hybridisation and literature data, an opinion about the subspecies level of Nikolsky's adder is supported. Differences between parts of the region in species composition and abundance are recorded.
