Essay

The thesis reveals the essence of a conductor’s profession as a type of a specialized activity, connected with theatre-concert practice. A conductor’s profession is viewed as a structural-functional unity. Discovery of the main structural parameters of a conductor’s activity made it possible to differentiate it from a chapel-master activity and to determine the chronological boundaries of its beginnings. This in its turn explained the usage of two terms to denote a leader of a music group, i. e.: a chapel-master (XVII – XVIII c.) and a conductor (since the XIX c.). Differentiation of chapel-master’s and conductor’s work enabled creation of a historic division into periods, which reflects ways of formation of a conductor’s profession.
