The Dissertation is dedicated to research documentary collections in the structure of the Odessa museums funds, beginning with 1825 - the foundation of the first museum in Odessa and finishing with the accepting "The Programmer of culture development for the period till the year 2007" in 2003. Such Programme was accepted in the state level for the first time in the history of museum business in Ukraine. With the aid of general scientific methods of research, special methods of research of archives and museum issues (comparing, historical, retrospective, chronological etc.) historical phenomena and facts were analysed in the close connection with historical situation, in which they appeared and were developed, and their qualitative changes in the different stages of development. Legislative and normative acts, that determined activities of Odessa museums, formation of museum meetings, that consisted funds of personal origin and documentary collections, were analysed. Peculiarities of keeping and description of the documents in museums, archives and scientific libraries were studied. The reasons of loss of museum collections, including documentary monuments, were reviewed. Recommendations, directed to the availability, safety, popularization of documentary collection were proposed.
