Essay

The research focuses on the comparative analysis of structural and semantic peculiarities of present-day derivational families with the base verbs sazhat', sadyty and sadzic in the Russian, Ukrainian and Polish languages in comparison with the English language. The definition of a derivational family with several base words (the so-called many-summit derivational family) has been suggested. Certain parameters of a many-summit derivational family as a particular type of derivational families have been distinguished and analyzed in the languages of comparison. The English lexical and derivational equivalents of the components of the derivational families in question have been found and described. The reasons for certain discrepancies in the derivational families of the languages under study are highlighted. Common and specific features of word-forming chains and paradigms, as well as those of derivational meanings within the structure of Slavonic and English derivational families have been traced.
