Essay

This thesis reveals structural, semantic, and communicative peculiarities of lexical units which represent the components of the situation CHANGE of MATRIMONIAL STATE (CMS). The research focuses on exposing the thematic dependence of lexicon on the conceptual structure of the situation under study. The paper highlights the main communicative and pragmatic components of the CMS situation in its speech representations in Modern English fiction, where: the declarative follows the combination of such speech acts as "directive - commisive"; the participants' communication is governed by the cooperative and dominative strategies, which are realized correspondingly through the tactics of explanation, persuasion, specification or the tactics of setting conditions, threatening, counter-argumentation and demand. The research specifies the peculiarities of non-verbal means, such as symbols, trappings, body language, in representing the situation of CMS in the English fiction of the 20th century.
