The object is the poetological features of the comedy of manners "The School for Scandal" by Sheridan and the problems of genre and style evolution in the British comedy of the XVIIth-XVIIIth centuries. The objective is the examination of the changes of "the comedy of manners" from the IInd part of the XVIIth till the IInd part of the XVIIIth centuries and invariable characteristics of "the comedy of manners" during the above-mentioned period. The methods are comparative and historical, sociocultural, comparative and stylistic, stylistic, historical and literary ones. The evolution of "the comedy of manners" from a baroque-classical to a rococo-sentimental model is revealed. The mechanism of interaction of rococo and sentimental elements in "The School for Scandal" by Sheridan is explored. Sphere of use is the relevant training courses.
