Essay

The research focuses on linguistic and cognitive peculiarities of compositional structure peculiar to the texts of American Poetry Renaissance, viewed through their genre specificity. The notions of poetic text "genre" and "composition" are defined within the framework of cognitive poetics. The role of conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy in forming and reconstructing the conceptual level of poetic text compositional structure is elucidated. Plot-and-image archetype is regarded as a basis of the pre-conceptual level of compositional structure of modernistic poetic text. In the light of possible worlds theory the gnosiological properties of the texts belonging to American Poetry Renaissance are revealed which enabled establishing the genre features of such texts. The analyzed texts' typology is elaborated according to their dominating genre features and parameters of compositional structure. Correlation and interdependence between the genre features and compositional parameters of the texts under investigation are demonstrated through construing the constantly reproduced genre-and-composition models of contents and sense formation. This allowed to reveal the strategies of contents and sense unfolding by which such texts are created, as well as definite linguistic and cognitive peculiarities of genre and composition patterning of the world typical of all the texts pertaining to the epoch of American Poetry Renaissance.
