Essay

The research deals with the diatheses of the derivative verbal nouns with the meaning of action, process, state and relation in modern English language. The paper regards valency as a correlation between the semantic doers of the situation and the sentence members, i.e. syntactic participants of the language structure. The syntactic structures which contain verbal nouns fall into univalent, bivalent and trivalent units. It has been found that bivalent verbal nouns present the most wide-spread group.4 patterns to embrace the semantic subject have been singled out for the univalent verbal nouns, 12 patterns – for the bivalent verbal nouns and 27 diatheses – for the trivalent units. Each of the diatheses under study is characterized by certain predominant syntactic functions. In all the syntactic constructions under study 10 morphological and syntactic means to express the semantic doers of the verbal nouns have been distinguished.
