Essay

A theory of wakefield excitation in a semi-infinite dielectric waveguide of rectangular cross-section by a sequence of short relativistic electron bunches is developed. Exact expressions for Cherenkov wave, transition radiation and quenching wave fields are obtained. It is shown that structure of longitudinal electric field has form of periodic narrow peaks as a result of equidistant transversal modes interference. The resonator concept of dielectric wakefield accelerator is investigated that allows to increase amplitude of electric field. Nonlinear processes of ion flow interaction with the virtual cathode are investigated as well as nonlinear theory of ion oscillator flow instability in field of relativistic electron beam
