Essay

The dissertation studied the effectiveness of interventions for prevention of HIV mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in the South of Ukraine. The MTCT rate 5.9 % (CI 95 % 3.3-9.5) was the lowest in the group taken zidovudine (AZT) since 36 weeks of pregnancy boosted with one dose of nevirapine prior to caesarean section. Higher level of maternal education associated with lower transmission rate. Premature rupture of membranes and maternal drug use increase the risk of mother-to-child transmission. Mulivaritate logistic regression analysis identified that lack of maternal ARV prophylaxis, vaginal delivery, prematurity and maternal age older then 30 years associated with higher risk of MTCT.
