Essay

This thesis is devoted to the study of historiography dealing with the relations between Byzantium and the Nomads of the northern coast of the Black Sea in the tenth - eleventh centuries. The main periods and stages of research devoted to this particular topic were established. Up to the middle of the twentieth century the narrative sources formed the basis for investigation, but later archaeological, numismatic, and other material sources has come to occupy the prime of place in the research. It has been found that the state of the studies on the problem depended on the tendencies which existed in the national historiographies.
