Essay

The thesis is concerned with a comprehensive study of semantics, paradigmatics and terminological formation of pairs of lexemes originating from word-forming conversion in English either of the constituents of which takes on a prefix. An extensive inventory of such formatives has been drawn and a set of research tools suitable for the study of their onomasiological potential has been elaborated. The etymological stratification, parts-of-speech combinability and placement of the transposed prefix in the converted pair as a result of clefting or juxtaposition have been singled out. It examines the terms originating from word-forming conversion where one of the constituents has been formed by means of the distributional asymmetry as regards their motivating structure.
