Research object – modern English terminological subsystem of mechanical engineering. Research aim – to find out the system organization of modern English mechanical engineering terminology, to identify word-formation and semantic characteristics and functions of its terminological units. The following research methods are used: descriptive method; structural method; method of component analysis; method of semantic analysis; method of onomasiology structuring; quantitative analysis. Scientific novelty: English terminological lexical units of mechanical engineering are analyzed for the first time; the status of mechanical engineering terms is found out; the functions of terms are revealed, the ways of term-formation are identified, the word-formative models are found out, the structure of multicomponent terms is analyzed; the onomasiology stratification of mechanical engineering terminological subsystem is identified; the semantic relations are characterized. Theoretical and practical value: The resultsof research work make a contribution to the general theory of term, terminology and onomasiology; they broaden scientific knowledge about peculiarities of term nomination, about basic term-formation tendencies of English mechanical engineering terminological subsystem. The results of work can be used in research work of students and postgraduate students. Sphere of usage: The materials and results of work can be used in a course of modern English lexicology (Chapters: “Lexical Semantics”, “Word-formation”, “Language Vocabulary”) and in the special course of terminology science (Chapters: “Terminological Nomination”, “Term Specificity”, “Term-formation”).
