This dissertation focuses on the study of the cognitive bases of emergence and realization of the connoteme potential in Ukrainian and English lexis. Being a parametre of interlinguistic comparison, lexical connotation is regarded as a part of the linguistic model of the world. With regard to classification of the connotation constituents’, associative and emotive vectors of the connotative components emergence and functioning are described. Context and frame spheres are identified as the realization field for lexical connotations. The role of background knowledge in the lexical connotations realization is highlighted. With regard to the stylistic realization of connotations’ the peculiarities of their constituents’ functioning in phraseological units, jargonisms and occasional formations are examined. Theoretical assumptions are applied to taxonomic class of phytonyms in Ukrainian and English. By means of comparative analysis, causes of identity, similarity, partial or complete differentiation of the connoteme potential, realized in the phytonyms of the above languages are established. National peculiarities of activating the connoteme potential realization are determined.
