Essay

This thesis addresses one of the topical issues of present-day humanities, as well as philological studies of literary semantics: the dichotomy ONE'S OWN/ALIEN. The paper determines ontological features of this dichotomy, introduces its model, exposes semantic structure of the key lexemes that denote ONE'S OWN, ALIEN, and BORDER. A new classification of simile as a means of the dichotomy ONE'S OWN/ALIEN verbalization in the imagery system of G.Greene's novels has been worked out, the notions of 'parabolic' and 'potential' similes have been introduced and examined in detail, the peculiarities of tension in the determined types of simile have been identified. The role of literary context in the representation of verbal images of ONE'S OWN and ALIEN has been revealed. A typology of personage images of ONE'S OWN and ALIEN has been introduced; the factors accounting for suspense as a result of these images actualization have been established.
