This thesis represents cognitive and functional analyses of language units denoting concept CRIMINAL in present-day American fiction and newspaper texts on a legal problem. It also reveals lexico-semantic, tropеic, tactical and strategic peculiarities of the concept CRIMINAL verbalization. The research focuses on exposing the semantic features of concept CRIMINAL which depend upon the genres of the texts analyzed.The paper highlights the peculiarities of personages’ interaction in modern American fiction; considers the employed communicative strategies and tactics; outlines the features of concept CRIMINAL verbalization in the communicative situations of "Investigation" and "Interrogation" in present-day American fiction; reveals language units denoting concept CRIMINAL in present-day American newspaper texts of different genres on a legal problem.
