Essay

The research focuses on the complex structural-semantic and communicative-functional analysis of the so-called commentable constructions in modern English on the material of literary and media discourses. The construction in question is a complex sentence in which the introductory part (a principle clause) is the indication of the fact of utterance (and its authorization) while the commentable part (a subordinate clause) serves to inform about the fact itself. Commentability is regarded not only as the ability of the commentable verbs to join object clauses but as a means of universal cognition of real and virtual worlds. The deep structure of the commentable construction has been explicated and the dependence of the use of commentable verbs on the type of discourse and on their group and individual semantics has been highlighted in the research. Commentability has been examined as a communicative-functional phenomenon. Commentable constructions have been represented in the form of macrostructural, modal, personal, referential structures that create the cohesion of the text.
