Essay

The thesis offers a comprehensive survey of the reasons and the pace of the development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It also provides a review of the basic schemes for negotiations within the framework of adjustment of the Near East confrontation in the 1940s–1990s, with an assessment of the degree of the Jordan factor influence on the peacemaking process in the region. The phenomenon of direct Palestinian-Israeli and Jordan-Israeli negotiations that were carried on for the first time in the history of the conflict is studied. It is noted that the fact Jordan entered into peacemaking process was a natural outcome of the Jordan policy which stuck to a realistic and balanced approach to solving problems of war and peace, and strove for basing itself on international law and acting in conformity with the world community.
