The research focuses on cognitive and communicative peculiarities of language means that denote rivalry and its constituents thus verbalizing the concept RIVALRY. The theoretical ground of conceptual and pragmatic analyses is highlighted. Language units belonging to different lexico-grammatical classes of words which represent rivalry are analyzed. Principles of their semantic structure are revealed. The integrative semantic essence of the concept RIVALRY represented in the meaning of certain language units is singled out. The frame structure of the referential situation rivalry that reflects the notional cognitive features is dwelled upon. The axiological value and associative content of the concept under analysis are specified by means of phraseological units as elements of secondary designation. Communicative strategies, tactics and moves used in characters’ speech are distinguished. The communicative and compositional peculiarities of this reflection in Modern English fiction are presented.
