Essay

This dissertation presents a complex analysis of the concept of the correlation between the form of the state and the character of national development in Ukraine, propounded in the works of native thinkers at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It is a complex study of the contents of both generally known concepts of the form of state as well those approaches to the indicated problem which have not yet been fully researched. The dissertation classifies different approaches to the definitions of the character of national development of the Ukrainian state which were developed by indigenous intellectuals. This analysis examines three basic traditions in the native social-political thought concerning the understanding of the direction of national development of Ukraine: panslavic-federalist, conservative-nationalistic, and national-independent. It critically reinterprets both the academic-theoretical works concerning the problems of Ukrainian nationhood, as well as the practical activity of the politically conscious and active Ukrainians in the struggle for national independence.
