Essay

The dissertation presents results of the investigation involving 156 patients (61 males and 95 females) with sensorineural hearing loss of unknown genesis who have been ex-amined by the method of high-sensitive computer tomography (CT). The author has found considerable prevalence of cochlear otosclerosis reaching 66.3% among patients with sensorineural hypoacusis of an unknown genesis. Various types and degree of the otosclerotic process, as well as the variants of patho-logical bone foci localisation in the inner ear capsule were studied in the patients with cochlear and mixed forms of otosclerosis using the high-sensitive CT data. The efficacy of the use of bisphosphonate fosamax for stabilizing an advancing hearing loss in patients with cochlear otosclerosis has been proved. Such effect was found in 36 (94.7%) of study patients.
