Essay

The author analyzed backgrounds of origin, development and establishment of state movement as principle direction in Ukrainian historiography of the XX century in the context of native and foreign historiography science. The researcher analyzed evolution of M. Hrushevskyi's views, role of his scientific scheme of Ukrainian history and significance of Lviv and Kyiv historical schools for new state (not populist) interpretation of historical processes. The author examined contribution of V.Lypynsky, D.Doroshenko, V.Kuchabsky, I.Krevetsky and other historians into research of history of Ukraine through its state interpretation. The reasons of interdiction of state direction of Ukrainian historiography in USSR, persecution of its representatives, development of this direction on west-Ukrainian territories, in Ukrainian Diaspora in Austria, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia were described. The researcher emphasized role of Scientific Society named after Taras Shevchenko, Ukrainian Liberal (Vil'nyi) University, Ukrainian research institutes in Berlin and Warsaw for development of researches of history of Ukrainian statehood and for training of scientific manpower. The author examined modern state and determined perspectives of further researches of state direction in historiography.
