Golovnia A. Linguocultural Space of Rudyard Kipling’s Fiction

The Thesis focuses on the investigation of linguocultural peculiarities of Rudyard Kipling’s fiction. Since the author belongs to two different ethnocultural traditions – English and Indian, R.Kipling’s fiction is considered in the light of the author’s bicultural language personality. Basic isomorphic (PERSON) and allomorphic (FLORA, FAUNA, NATURAL PHENOMENA) concepts of language and conceptual pictures of the world in R.Kipling’s fiction have been pointed out. The analysis of the concepts and conceptual metaphors typical of English (PERSON IS A HOST/MASTER OF THE WORLD, WEAPON IS A FRIEND, PASSION FOR WEALTH IS EVIL, EDUCATION IS A POWERFUL FRIEND) and Indian (LIFE IS A WHEEL MOVING IN THE SPECIFIED DIRECTION, PERSON IS A TRIFLE IN THE WORLD OF NATURE, NATURE IS A POWERFUL LIVING CREATURE, EVIL IS A MERCILESS WHIP and FRIENDSHIP IS A HAND OF HELP) world mapping has proved the anthropocentrism of the English and the focus upon nature in the Indian ethnic groups. Cultural peculiarities of both nations,reflected in the linguocultural space of R.Kipling’s fiction, are rendered by means of phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic language units.
