This dissertation focuses on revealing the peculiarities paroemic space in American poetic texts. Paroemia is viewed as a cognitive construal incorporating three aspects: pre-conceptual, conceptual, and verbal. The application of conceptual integration and iconicity theory made it possible to outline the mechanisms of paroemiae meaning development, particularly mapping of various kinds, and the specific character of their formation. Iconicity is treated as a semiotic principle of paroemiae formation, namely their constituents’ organization. Paroemiae actualization is understood as a unity of their formal, semantic and syntactic highlighting devices and linguistic and cognitive operations of their foregrounding. Semantic, cognitive and pragmatic analysis of paroemiae enabled constructing the model of poetic texts paroemic space formed by the hierarchically arranged concepts having their own structural elements of different priority.
