Essay

The thesis is devoted to the investigation of romanticism traditions in the Ukrainian literature at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. Since the existence of neoromanticism itself as a trend in the Ukrainian literature is still a disputable problem nowadays, the work deals not so much with neoromanticism that existed in the literature at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, as with the reflection of romanticism traditions in the literary process of the modernism period. Examining the specificity of Ukrainian modernism and romanticism, the candidate for a degree establishes typological connections between them, defines peculiarities of modernistic explications in the Ukrainian literature. Three literary works, which are written in the tradition of neoromanticism, are analyzed in the thesis. These are “Osinnya kazka” by Lesya Ukrajinka, “Kazka Starogo Mlyna” by Spyrydon Cherkasenko and „Po dorozi v Kazku” by Oleksandr Oles’. It is identified, that the traditions of “classical” romanticism and modernism are closely interwoven in these works. And in the candidate’s opinion, romantic tendencies take the key stand in the works. These are romantic temper of the main characters, contraposition of two worlds and symbolization. But these romantic tendencies are already enriched with the experience of modernism, that reflected in both genre, stylistic search and in general ideology of the interpreted works.
