Essay

The thesis is dedicated to complex studies of S. Rachmaninov’s artistic individuality phenomenon and his influence on the XX-th century piano art development. The author studies the process of formation of S.Rachmaninov’s personality as an artist. Under investigation are also theatre characteristics of S.Rachmaninov performance, which satiate music process with action and theatre drama. In the great artist’s performance we can trace synthesis of the Russian and West European traditions, successive continuity to piano art performance by F.Liszt and N.Rubinstein. S.Rachmaninov’s complex psychological mentality, exaltation of his affects and his introvert temperament are dedicated. S.Rachmaninov's performing art is viewed together with that of his outstanding contemporaries: J.Hofmann, J.Levinne, L.Godowsky, F.Busoni, V.Horowitz, Ar.Rubinstein and others. Reflection of S. Rachmaninov's performing traditions is examined in the performing styles of those musicians who heard him in the concert hall (K. Igumnov, V. Horowitz, Ar. Rubinstein, A. Goldenweizer) as well as of those who had never heard his playing on the stage, but whose playing maintained traditions evoked by S.Rachmaninov's intonations (V.Sofronitsky, L.Oborin, P.Serebryakov, H.Neyhause, S.Richter etc.).
