Sobkov Y. Typology of cryptonyms in English and Ukrainian languages.

The thesis deals with the problem of the hidden names on the whole and considers the cryptonyms of English and Ukrainian writers and publicists in particular. Cryptonyms, like pseudonyms can be found in most anthroposystems. They make up a significant sector of onomastics in both languages under investigation. 2115 English and 6787 Ukrainian cryptonyms have been analyzed. The structure of the cryptonyms, their origin (names, patronymic names, family names, pseudonyms, etc.) and motives (according to the principle of complete and partial concealment) have been the basis of the analyses. The comparison of structure, principles of origin and formation motives is accompanied by statistic indices which in their turn, make the peculiarities of the cryptonymic systems of the English and Ukrainian languages more expressive. Common and different features of the cryptonyms in both languages under investigation have been determined.
