The thesis is devoted to the analysis of poetics and range of problems of William Golding's late nov-els. As a theoretical and methodological basis of research it has been chosen the Umberto Eco’s theory of the “open work of art” in combination with the poststructuralist and postmodernist ideas. A division into “open – close” works of art helps to understand the main trends in the novels of W. Golding. The result of our analysis is a comprehension of late novels such as “Darkness Visible”, “Paper Men”, “Double Tongue” as an “open works of art” in which the typical features like indeterminacy, decentration, fragmen-tariness create conditions for the philosophical self reader’s search. On the different levels of novel’s poet-ics the effect of “openness” is created by functioning of the special postmodernist figures like simulacrum, rhizome, supplement.
