The paper concerns with the investigation of the image of a lawyer in the modern European culture, the difficulties of its formation and functioning. In the process of analysis one forms the definition of the image of a lawyer. It sets the idealized type which assigns a socio cultural model and value system that could be a guide in the formation process of the personality of a lawyer. One defines and investigates the basic models of a lawyer - ideological, moral and ethical, educational, state and political - as valuable and informative specification of "the image of a lawyer" in the modern European culture, professional complex and professionalism of a lawyer in the context of demands-expectations in culture. One makes the analysis of the formation peculiarities of the modern "image of a lawyer", concentrated in the image as in the desired image of a lawyer and the image of a lawyer that is formed by means of mass media.
