Vasylyeva M. Metaphoric realization of the concept POLITICS in the present-day English political discourse

The object: the paper examines metaphoric expressions that realize the concept POLITICS in the present-day English political discourse. The objective of the research is to establish the lingual-cultural specificity of the concept POLITICS through examination of its metaphoric verbalization in the present-day English political discourse. The methods: the complex methodology includes methods of definitional, componential, contextual, quantitative analysis, as well as methodology of frame modeling and principles of the theory of conceptual metaphor. The main results, novelty: among the main results of the research are elicitation of the metaphors of POLITICS as the grounding of metaphorical actualization of the concept POLITICS; determination of the specificity of eidos and logos realization of the concept POLITICS; elicitation of the cognitive transformations of the correlates of the metaphors of POLITICS realized with novel metaphoric expressions; modeling of the metaphors of POLITICS as conceptual net.Scientific novelty of the research is determined by the fact that it is the first time cognitive-discursive study of the concept POLITICS metaphorically realized in the present-day English political discourse. Theoretical value: the results make a contribution into cognitive semantics and frame semantics. Practical application: the results can be used in theoretical courses of English Lexicology (topics “Lexical semantics” and “Vocabulary”), English Stylistics (topic “Stylistic semasiology”), in special courses on cognitive semantics, in the sphere of lexicography.
