Essay

The thesis examines the piano legacy of S. Bortkiewicz in full diversity of his genre palette. Analysis of scientific sources and music critical materials containing information about the composer made it possible to suggest a new devision into periods of his creative work and to bring to light some problems of historiography. Close connection of master’s creative work with the classic-romantic art and tonal thinking brought about his piano style genesis study. On the basis of his piano writing peculiarities and the type of chosen composition there is made classification of his piano cycle pieces. Among large-scale genres are examined sonatas and works for piano with orchestra in which S. Bortkiewicz synthesizes different compositional principles. The artist’s selective approach to the stable experience, deliberate pretence of “stylistic presence” of another author by means of allusions and quatations, image variations device, etc. support S. Bortkiewicz’s creative position activity and individual interpretation of the classic-romantic tradition.
