Essay

The thesis focuses on the analysis of English phrasal verbs, i.e. complex lexemes that consist of a monolexemic verb and a special component of adverbial and prepositional origin standing in the postposition to the verb and forming with it more or less stable semantic and syntactic combinations. The research considers verbs with the postpositive components 'on' and 'off', defines their common and specific semantic and derivational features. Semantic classification proposed in the thesis has permitted to single out common typical and specific meanings, antonymic and synonymic meanings in the semantic system of the lexical units under analysis, to define their quantitative characteristics and the degree of productivity. As a result of the derivational analysis of the verbs with the postpositive components 'on' and 'off' the ways of their formation from the corresponding initial verbs with the help of the postpositive components 'on' and 'off' (word-forming derivation) and at the expense of the development of their own semantic structure (semantic derivation) have been defined.
