Essay

The research deals with English and Ukrainian evaluative phraseological units, which are considered in their linguo-cognitive aspect. The emphasis is laid on the semantic and structural peculiarities of the evaluative phraseological units. The above mentioned phraseological units represent evaluative concepts that constitute the English and the Ukrainian languages values system. The status of the evaluative component in the phraseological meaning is characterised as well as its relations with the other components of connotation such as emotional, cultural, intensifying, stylistic ones. The conceptual analysis of the evaluative phraseological units presupposes their description as a system of concepts. Accordingly, it brings into the open the principles of the semantic organisation of phraseological units, which verbalize the values of the corresponding language communities. The concept is realised in the phraseological system by means of a frame model. The universal frame models representing the meaning of the language units in question have been worked out on the basis of the linguo-cognitive principles. The cognitive mechanisms of value notions nomination in the English and Ukrainian linguistic models of the world by means of phraseology have been determined. The research considers the universal character and differences in the value systems as reflected in phraseology of the non-closely cognate languages. The axiological ethnocultural dominants have been singled out and the correlations between the structural, semantic types and type of evaluation have been described.
