Essay

The thesis focuses on the diachronic study of word-building, structural and semantic development of the English military vocabulary under the influence of certain sociolinguistic factors. The structural organization based on the field principle (core and periphery) and the lexical composition of the military lexicon subsystem within the English vocabulary (military terminology and substandard lexis) have been analysed. The thematic stratification of the vocabulary units under study has been carried out. Core lexemes within military terminology as bases of lexical innovations have been distinguished. The interrelation between general literary lexis and military terminology, on the one hand, and military slang, on the other, has been subjected to analysis. Types of new military lexical and phraseological units have been determined. Special attention has been attached to morphological and semantic ways of building up military lexical units (affixation, composition, abbreviation, semantic and phraseological derivation, borrowing) and basic structural-semantic patterns have been singled out. The structural-semantic analysis of military lexical innovations has been carried out. The correlation between certain extralinguistic and lexico-semantic processes has been established. Three main sociofunctional groups of newly coined military lexical units have been distinguished.
