The thesis focuses on the cognitive analysis of proper names in literary reviews in British and American newspapers and magazines. The use of proper names іn literary reviews is considered as a recognizable cultural event. It is argued that the conceptualization of proper names is among the main characteristics of this type of literary discourse. The process of conceptualization of proper names is viewed from an axiological perspective. The thesis looks at various methods of conceptualization of proper names and considers how they are related to objective and subjective phenomena within reflective modality. The need for both linguistic and rhetorical means of conceptualization is emphasized. Proper names are argued to fulfill textual function of foregrounding style, genre, setting and character-related foregrounding. The conceptual dimensions of proper names are presented in frameworks, organized with the help of modules which stand for basic categories of literary criticism.
