This thesis introduces a new approach to the comparative and typological study of occasional transformations of set expressions in English and Ukrainian fiction of the XXth century. The paper highlights theoretic and methodological fundamentals in the study of phraseological semantics of occasional set expressions; implementation of methods of phraseological identification of English and Ukrainian stable and occasional set expressions; classification of English and Ukrainian occasional set expressions according to the types of occasional transformations; identification of common and divergent ways and means of occasional transformations of set expressions; alterations in semantic structure and connotative semantics of English and Ukrainian occasional set expressions as compared to the stable ones within microcontext, macrocontext and situational context; national and cultural grounds of such changes; tendencies in the development of English and Ukrainian phraseological systems.
