Essay

The thesis identifies the main functions of archetypal images, motives, plot situations and models in J.R.R. Tolkien's literary works. Using the mythological-critical concept of textual analysis based on the theories of C.-G. Jung, N. Frye, M. Eliade, C. Levi-Strauss, G. Bachelard the archetypal layer of Tolkien's literary texts has been analyzed at various levels of literary structure: plot, compositional, spaciotemporal, character and semantic. The specifics of the author's individual depiction of character archetypes (the Hero, the Shadow, the Anima / the Animus, the Wise Old Man), elements (the earth, fire, water, air) have been determined. We have demonstrated the originality of literary transformation of such archetypes as the Self, the Individuation, the Duel, the Return. The role of archetypal projections in struc-tural organization of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy as a single literary unit has been ascertained. The main features of the fantasy genre have been characterized through the peculiarities of archetypal literary structures and by means of juxtaposing fantasy with contiguous literary genres.
