Essay

This research focuses on the peculiarities of syntactic organization of contemporary American poetry within the theoretical framework of cognitive semiotics and synergetics. The paper elucidates cognitive and semiotic properties of syntactic constructions viewed as microsyntactic units of a poetic text, outlines a model of syntactic space as a macrosyntactic system of a poem, revealing its synergetic characteristics such as complexity, integrity, non-linearity, dissipativity and openness. Iconicity is regarded as a semiotic principle which imposes cognitive constraints on the formation of syntactic constructions in modern American poetic texts. Originality and novelty of the form of poetic syntactic units are achieved by constructive and creative mapping due to such operations as extension, compression and/or permutation. The specificity of modern American poetic speech has been revealed through image-schema patterns of its typical syntactic constructions. The type of connection between syntactic constructions in modernist and postmodernist American poetry (linear, framing or spaсial) is influenced by a recurring type of semantic and syntactic relations, as well as the style of poetic thinking in general.
