This thesis focuses on the research of semantic structure of exclamatory utterances and their functioning in English сonversational discourse. The typology of exclamatory utterances introduced in the thesis is worked out in accordance with the principle of correlation of emotive and cognitive elements in the propositional structure of the utterance. The following utterance types are introduced: affective non-propositional, emotive mono-propositional and emotionally non-intensive multipropositional. It has been revealed that a specific type of the utterance is closely related to the psychological state of the producer. Our study of pragmasemantic structure of exclamatory utterances has resulted in the development of a complex speech act taxonomy of exclamatory utterances. Processing the emotional background of communication involves a set of strategies, tactics and techniques. Exclamatory utterances prove to be a major factor in changing the emotional intensity of communication. The emotive competence of an English speaker includes both strategies of emotional communication and rules оf emotionality.
