The dissertation introduces a new approach to the comparative and typological analysis of allusive speech acts in English and Ukrainian publicistic discourse. The paper highlights theoretic and methodological fundamentals in the study of allusion in terms of communicative pragmatics, introduces methods of comparing allusive speech acts; analyses structure and types of allusive speech acts, communicative strategies and tactics pursued by allusion, ways of allusive conceptualization; classifies English and Ukrainian allusions according to their forms, transformations and sources, identifies common and different ways and means of allusion aimed at expressing its communicative and pragmatic potential in the languages compared
