Object: historical novels “Waverley”, “Ivanhoe”, “Rob Roy”, “Quentin Durward”, “Old Mortality”of W. Skott and “Вefore a storm”, “Storm” “At a wharf”, “Youth of Mazepa”, “Ruin”, “Karmeluk” of M. Starytsky. Purpose: to confront in typological and genetic aspects formal-semantic features of historical novels. Practical value: research materials used in the process of teaching of lecture courses from history of Ukrainian and foreign literature, in the special course of comparative literary criticism, at implementation of the advanced studies. Methods: comparatively-historical, cultural-historical, typological, contact-genetical, con-textual, structural, formalistic.
